A Hugo Award Nominee!

Featuring an introduction by Neil Gaiman!

“J. Michael Straczynski is, without question, one of the greatest science fiction minds of our time.”   -- Max Brooks (World War Z)

For four decades, J. Michael Straczynski has been one of the most successful writers in Hollywood, one of the few to forge multiple careers in movies, television and comics.  Yet there’s one story he’s never told before: his own.

In this dazzling memoir, the acclaimed writer behind Babylon 5, Sense8, Clint Eastwood’s Changeling and Marvel’s Thor reveals how the power of creativity and imagination enabled him to overcome the horrors of his youth and a dysfunctional family haunted by madness, murder and a terrible secret.

Joe''s early life nearly defies belief. Raised by damaged adults—a con-man grandfather and a manipulative grandmother, a violent, drunken father and a mother who was repeatedly institutionalized—Joe grew up in abject poverty, living in slums and projects when not on the road, crisscrossing the country in his father’s desperate attempts to escape the consequences of his past.

To survive his abusive environment Joe found refuge in his beloved comics and his dreams, immersing himself in imaginary worlds populated by superheroes whose amazing powers allowed them to overcome any adversity. The deeper he read, the more he came to realize that he, too, had a superpower: the ability to tell stories and make everything come out the way he wanted it. But even as he found success, he could not escape a dark and shocking secret that hung over his family’s past, a violent truth that he uncovered over the course of decades involving mass murder.

Straczynski’s personal history has always been shrouded in mystery. Becoming Superman lays bare the facts of his life: a story of creation and darkness, hope and success, a larger-than-life villain and a little boy who became the hero of his own life.  It is also a compelling behind-the-scenes look at some of the most successful TV series and movies recognized around the world.

Review

“J. Michael Straczynski is, without question, one of the greatest science fiction minds of our time.”  -- Max Brooks ( World War Z)

“Everything I read made me want to stand up and salute. I can’t stress enough how significant and moving (to say nothing of gripping and sometimes hilarious) this book is.  It’s a magnificent piece of work that will stay with me for a long, long time.” -- Cory Doctorow, author of Radicalized and Walkaway

“Once I started, I couldn’t put it down.  Straczynski embedded a mystery in an autobiography.  Has to be a first.” -- Dan DiDio, Editor in Chief, DC Comics

“Part Hollywood how-to, part Frank McCourt-style reflection on emotional neglect and poverty, “Becoming Superman” is an enveloping look back at a unique career.” -- Washington Post

“His ability to stay the course, to work hard at all times, and to keep writing were his salvation time and again. This book is a testament to that ― and it is an inspiring, touching look at how someone born into darkness can find the light and go on to do great things.” -- NPR

“I just finished reading Becoming Superman and can, without a mote of hyperbole, state it is one of the most terrifying and inspirational, funny and empathic nonfiction books of our time. I’m too old to be currying favors. Just trust me. Buy it or die!” -- Walter Koenig

“A fascinating journey through careers in three different professions—comic books, TV, and movies—from an accomplished master of each. Rare to have such detail and such access. A major literary autobiography!” -- Bestselling author Greg Bear

“Straczynski [...] delivers a frank memoir that’s equally harrowing and triumphant.” -- Publishers Weekly

“Becoming Superman is a valuable resource for those wishing to look behind the curtain to one of pop culture’s most cherished and esteemed writers [...] It is an incredible story of familial abuse and its aftermath, of perseverance and fortitude, of endurance and determination. Highly recommended.” -- Fantasy Book Review

“Gripping. An amazing testament to the range of human durability and determination, overcoming our impossibly dark side with something even more unlikely and miraculous -- hope.”
-- Hugo and Nebula Award Winning Novelist David Brin

“A deeply moving testament to the power of storytelling, and a no-bullshit guide to becoming, if not Superman, a better person and writer.” -- Tor.com

“Straczynski’s memoir more than lives up to the promises of its sub-subtitle…Joe never saves the world à la Superman, but pulls through with a heart, spine, and soul of steel. ..” -- AV Club

“Straczynski’s life story is simultaneously horrifying and uplifting. He survives a childhood worse than almost anything you could imagine and ends up taking an unlikely path to Hollywood success. It’s funny, sad, infuriating, and inspiring--often all at once.” -- Jason Snell, host of The Incomparable podcast

“His true life story turns out to be as gripping and inspiring as any of his fiction.” -- B&N Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog

“I’ve rarely felt such pain while reading a memoir, or felt so satisfied at its conclusion. It’s some kind of miracle that he’s taken this lifelong experience, leavened it with perspective, and created something so universal. Powerful, powerful stuff.” -- Andy Ihnatko, Tech Author and Co-Host of The Material Podcast

I''ve known Joe since high school, since 1971, and he gives me bit parts in a few of the dark chapters here, neither as a good guy nor a villain, but as a witness. Allow me to offer one more small witness: You might be inclined to receive the details of Joe''s personal story as exaggerations, dramatic hyperbole, especially coming as they do from the pen of a science fiction writer of his stature, his towering creativity. Please resist that inclination.

In the few episodes with which I''m personally familiar Joe does the opposite. He soft-pedals. He lets the villains off easy and accepts more than his actual share of responsibility for catastrophe. He would have been amply justified if he''d come down much, much harder on the people who hurt him. One of them was my late father and I was there for the story.

I can only assume Joe does the same in the rest of the book. If he says his father was a bastard, then his father was more than likely a far worse bastard even that Joe lets on. If Joe praises his high school teachers, then you can be assured they were very, very good teachers. One more witness: They were indeed great teachers. I studied under both of them for three years and taught alongside them in later years.

“My father was a monster.” As a fan who’s seen J. Michael Straczynski (JMS) at a number of appearances, I’d heard those words and imagined the worst father I’d ever known or heard of. I couldn’t have been more wrong. He was far worse than that.

Year by year, step by step, JMS describes every conscious decision he made, even while extremely young, that would form him into the man he wanted to be, not what seemed destined by family and society. Leavened with snark and humor, the book is gripping and avoids the unrelenting grimness that it might otherwise have had.

While the family secrets and the odds against JMS’ success are a major thread, never think that that’s what the book is about. The real story is about the man, his decisions, his determination and willingness to face fears and do the right thing. Whether you’re a fan of his work or never heard of him before, this is a book well worth your time.

"Becoming Superman" is about his personal universe and just as important because this is the story that fans don''t know anything about. That said, being familiar with Straczynski''s work is helpful (you know way more than you realize) but not a prerequisite. He''s a storyteller. And in this book he''s telling *his* story. The content is horrifying and inspirational and the writing is just as exceptional as you''d expect.

I''ve been a B5 fan from the author''s earliest posts about the show on Usenet, and that led me to JMS the rest of his work. I''d been looking forward to this book for months, ever since he announced it on his Twitter feed. He warned everyone that his childhood had been very difficult, and hinted at some of the problems, but that doesn''t begin to do them justice.

As it turns out, JMS has a gift for understatement. Let this be the mother of all trigger warnings by saying you need to make it through the first 27% of the book (according to my Kindle reader) before the most unrelenting, abject horror I''ve ever encountered lets up enough for you to believe that he''ll even survive, much less go on to become successful. His mother was severely damaged both physically and emotionally, but his father was a monster who is hopefully roasting in hell for all eternity. Growing up in that family was a nightmare so horrible that if this had been a novel instead of real life, I can imagine Stephen King repeatedly saying, "dude, enough, you need to tone it down." It''s frankly a miracle that JMS not only lived through it, but was intact enough to find a way to go on.

He did make it, though, and the story is amazing. His battles with animation companies, Hollywood executives, and more demonstrate how he was willing on multiple occasions to walk away rather than compromise his integrity. His ability to sacrifice everything in order to write his way out of any difficulties is inspiring, and his successes give you hope that eventually the good guys do win. The best part, though, may be the extraordinary act of courage necessary to write this book at all, given the strict code of secrecy that surrounded his family, which all too many of us can identify with.

It''s a brilliant book. You just have to get through that first 27% to know it.

Leave it to JMS to write an autobiography that is uplifting despite the bleak hell of his childhood. Becoming Superman is an epic - complete with true evil, journeys through the wilderness, shocking twists, loyal friends, setbacks, and triumphs. The feats within aren’t presented as heroic by the author. They’re calmly laid out as a series of decisions that are based on persistence and trying to do the right thing; i.e., trying to think like Superman - one of the few symbols of goodness the author saw as a child. Sometimes heroism isn’t saving the planet. It’s everyday heroism. Surviving the nearly unsurvivable. Being kind when the world is cruel. Keeping a moral compass when you grow up with evil and neglect. Pursuing your dreams despite repeated setbacks. As JMS says, “Doesn’t matter, get up, keep fighting.”

Becoming Superman is also a window into the nitty-gritty of writing and of the entertainment industry. This book covers it all - early days with writing (and writing and writing, always improving), to journalism, animation, live action, screenwriting, comics, and more. There are behind the scenes stories from shows like The Real Ghostbusters, Murder, She Wrote, Babylon 5, and Sense8. It’s fascinating to be the proverbial fly on the wall in pivotal meetings and events.

Lastly, Becoming Superman is a mystery. Stray comments and odd family behavior over a lifetime eventually reveal the secret his family has been obsessively hiding. You can almost see it coming from clues dropped over the years, but it seems too horrible to be real. Then again, it’s a good reminder that those who perpetrate up-close, personal evil are often capable of evil on a larger scale.

This book is amazing. I don’t like non-fiction but was curious to know more about the person behind some of my favorite shows and stories. I ended up reading it in one sitting, staying up far too late. It’s just that good.

I just finished the Audible audio book version of "Becoming Superman: My Journey From Poverty to Hollywood". I highly recommend this book! (Also available in Hardcover and Kindle) This is no Hollywood celebrity "fluff" piece!

It''s the autobiography of J. Michael Straczynski AKA JMS AKA Joe AKA "The Great Maker", Hollywood producer, writer, and creator of assorted works ranging from non-fiction to fiction, to comic books, to journalism, radio, TV shows and movies. It''s a powerful read, both highly disturbing to the point of being depressing and infuriating yet simultaneously very inspiring.

The disturbing parts were his childhood, his dysfunctional and abusive family, the associated life-experiences that come with that, some of his career experiences, and the other challenges and hurdles he had to deal with - figuratively the "crap he had to put up with" esp. for the first 20+ years of his life. I would not wish his history on anyone and, yet, it is precisely that duress that forged him into the Superman he is today.

The inspiring part comes from his overcoming that and, in albeit painful ways, becoming highly successful and well regarded at his craft. He did it "his way", burning bridges through much of that journey. Being principled in a not principled career venue (esp. Hollywood) does that. I''ve been impressed with his writing for a long time, a raving fan since the mid 1990''s. That now includes this autobiography, it significantly deepened my respect and appreciation of this absolute treasure of a man.

My first contact with his work was his science fiction TV series Babylon 5, more accurately an epic myth in a science fiction setting. One story, written like a 5 chapter novel, that took literally 5 annual seasons x 22 hour long episodes per season to tell. ONE STORY! It is, to this day, perhaps the finest video fiction I have EVER experienced. He broke with tradition, did what was absolutely unheard of, had to fight to do so every step of the way, and in so doing pioneered revolutionary changes to the televised fiction industry. As important and impressive that project was, turns out it was only one of many, the tip of his massive iceberg.

Again, if you are looking for a good read or listen, in no uncertain terms I strongly recommend this book!

As a fan of JMS since Babylon 5, I was well aware that JMS could tell great stories in a variety of mediums, but always wondered where the talent and motivation to do so came from. (Hint: The best and most impactful art is practically never created by those with serene and happy childhoods and/or adult lives) I knew that there was going to be some severe childhood trauma in this book going in, but was completely unprepared for the wild journey this book takes deep into the "pit of man''s fears" (to quote Rod Serling).

This book was so gripping and well-written, that every spare moment I had in the two days since receiving it was consumed rabidly turning the pages in anticipation of what was coming next. Yes it is that good.

At one point while reading, I physically dropped the book on the floor like a hot potato due to a figurative punch in the gut delivered by JMS. When Harlan Ellison told JMS why there was always a "fifth wheel" present during dinner conversations with the two of them he was obviously talking about JMS, but might as well have been talking about me and it hit like a ton of bricks. I found myself staring at a blank wall for a bit to recover, the texture of the drywall blurring as tears were stinging my eyes. Ouch. JMS''s fictional stories have always had a powerful effect, but they pale in comparison to the *real* story of JMS and his life.

Why on earth are you still sitting there reading this? Buy this book. Buy it right now even if you''ve never heard of JMS or his work.

Riveting autobiography from the creator of Babylon 5
Reviewed in the United States on February 29, 2020

There''s a subtitle to this book, which really kind of says it all about the life of J. Michael Straczynski, probably most well known as the creator of Babylon 5, and it goes like this: "With Stops Along the Way at Murder, Madness, Mayhem, Movie Stars, Cults, Slums, Sociopaths, and War Crimes". Sadly, none of this is exaggeration or anything of the sort. If you want a summary of all that, JMS, as he is known, has a nice summary of the book on his Twitter feed from back when it was just about to be released. The subtitle is a succinct overview of that summary and of the book. It''s likely that some of what I say will be a rehash of that summary (no, I don''t have it open as I write this), but it - and the book - does shed a light on what made JMS the writer that he became.

My first encounter with JMS was, as maybe for a lot of people, with Babylon 5, his seminal work and which I''m positive will be what he is known for long after everything else he''s done has been forgotten. I really didn''t know much about his work prior to Babylon 5, although I did my best to keep up with what he did after the show ended its run back in the late 1990s. Becoming Superman does its due diligence in recounting all the things that he has worked on in television, movies, and comic books. As examples, in comics he did a 7 year run on the Amazing Spiderman (which to this day I still have all the issues of), a run on Superman itself, as well as other books, including his own line of comics. Television? Too many to count, I think. Most people know about the Babylon 5 follow-up, Crusade, as well as Jeremiah and Sense8 (which I have, sadly, yet to see any of). I''m sure there are some folks out there know that he worked on Jake and Fatman, Murder She Wrote, and a revival of The Twilight Zone, for which he wrote a script from a Rod Serling outline. He worked on many cartoons, including She-Ra and Masters of the Universe. In movies, he''s worked on several genre movies, and wrote the screenplay for Changeling, a movie directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Angelina Jolie, a result of years of research from back in the day when he was a journalist.

But Becoming Superman is more than just list all the above accomplishments, the kind of list most autobiographies contain. It is a story of a family that is about as dysfunctional and violent as I have ever heard of, and how that family life shaped JMS into the writer he has become. His father was a violent drunk, who beat his mother and him on a regular basis, and who has a deep, dark secret from his past that is just barely hinted at in the subtitle to the book. Aside from the war crimes, Charles Straczynski was a criminal who evaded the law by moving all over the country for years. JMS never really had a solid home because of this. He eventually tried to escape by various means (insert the "cults" here), and eventually did get away.

But it''s not all bad and sad stuff. His youth, while stunting his social growth, also by necessity turned him into a persistent and stubborn individual who never gave up, and who never compromised his principles. Those uncompromising principles are on full display as he gained a reputation in Hollywood for being difficult to work with. He left Jeremiah, Crusade, and other shows due to what he saw as interference in telling the story he wanted to tell (there is advice from
a revered writer to this effect, advice which he took to heart but at the same time led to him being difficult while simultaneously helped him become a successful writer), but when left alone to tell the story he wanted to tell, a classic was born in Babylon 5.

Clearly there''s a lot more to the story than I''ve talked about here. I didn''t know much about the life of JMS before I read Becoming Superman, but as it turns out, there''s a good reason for that. The family didn''t want to talk about its secrets because of just how heinous they were. Once JMS decided to break the family silence, it all came pouring out in this book. Quite frankly, what he went through would have demoralized most people to the point of giving up. Becoming Superman is the tale of a man who did not give up, and the science fiction world is better for it. It''s riveting reading. At times it''s not very pleasant. At times it''s uplifting. But it lets the world know that a person can overcome terrible hardships and become whatever they want to be. I think we all need that kind of story now and again.

I had just read a quite dark book and thought "Ahh, now for something lighter". How wrong could I have been when I first started turning those pages. JMS''s upbringing is nothing short of harrowing. I had tears at various points, I admit... both at the sad moments but also the brighter moments like the tale involving a pipe. This book is the definition of autobiography. It is very much JMS himself front and centre, interwoven with his career. Being a master storyteller he manages to weave the two sides into a narrative that makes perfect sense and you can''t have one without the other. Being greedy I would have liked more, particularly around B5. More about the cast and production, but I need to remind myself this is not a B5 behind the scenes book it''s an autobiography. I daresay that the book could be picked up by anyone, someone who hadn''t even seen his work, as the story stands so strongly in its own right with a narrative that spans countries over various decades. I am avoiding any detail as I feel readers need to go in with a clean mind and let the story unfold for themselves. But this is a tale of sadness, happiness, perseverance and one ultimately of hope. I cannot recommend it enough.

I’ve loved this man’s work for over a decade now. I truly believe he has one of the most fascinating life stories that I’ve ever encountered, and now that story is written in this book, for all of us to find inspiration and share in his experience. To Joe: Much like the characters in Sense8, I now understand you and what you’ve been through a great deal more than I did a month ago. Thank you.

A brilliant book about one of my favourite writers.

Goes between being tragic and disturbing, heartwarming and funny, and incredibly inspirational. It''s a serious roller-coaster ride, but more than worth the price of purchase, whether you''re a fan of JMS'' work or not.

It''s exactly what you expect. Well written, fun, easy to digest and not overly long! Great insight into the man as well. Well worth a read if you''re interested in his work at all.
