As a prior participant of PM Learning Solutions PMP Exam Preparation course, I can confirm this book offers the online or in class experience afforded to attendees, minus the charisma and narration of Belinda S. Goodrich herself!
This is not a book in my opinion, rather, a buddy whom from the start (Page 1 – I, _____________, commit to completing my PMP exam by______________.), serves to excite you about your journey and propel you into Project Management.
A one stop shop, the PMP Exam Study Guide offers information on the credentialing process itself, with tools to assist in the application process, what to expect when you are expecting to exam, from the experience itself to managing anxiety and believe me, as a certified PMI professional, with multiple certifications, I can confirm the anxiety exists! Reading about what you may experience from the perspective of anxiety and how best to work through it, is one of many golden nuggets offered in this Guide.
I believe the PMP Exam Study Guide is suited towards beginners as well as seasoned project management professionals based upon the following:
LAYOUT: The PMP Exam Study Guide is laid out in a thoughtful and strategic manner from the initial steps of the journey, to the Practice Exams, through to the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. Throughout the Guide, are little Easter Eggs, known as “Belinda’s Hints”, which one is best served to pay close to attention to and utilize throughout the course of this book.
USE OF GRAPHICS: The use of visuals in the PMP Exam Study Guide for me (a visual learner from The Seven Learning Styles) is one of many helpful aspects of The Guide. The ability to digest the difference between Deliverable, Verified Deliverable, and Accepted Deliverable via a graphic, facilitates an understanding beyond what is stated in verbiage and presents a picture with which to correlate the action and process.
USE OF EXAMPLES: The use of examples dovetails with visuals in the PMP Exam Study Guide and again, you are presented with the ability to digest the information from a visual as well as real-life scenario perspective.
ITTOS: A world unto itself, Inputs, Outputs, Tools, and Techniques (ITTOs) seems to be the biggest area of stress, concern, and confusion for aspiring PMPs. Great care is taken to explain this area and throughout The Guide, the ITTOs process is broken out piece by piece to help deconstruct and construct if you will, what is otherwise a daunting aspect of Project Management with “hundreds of ITTOs across 49 processes. And no, you do not need to memorize them all!” This for me was the biggest break through when I took the course online, the ability to decode, decipher, and actually understand the ITTOs, thanks to the approach used my Belinda and now offered as part of The Guide, is fantastic!
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION / CONTRIBUTION: Ability to contribute to future content of this training material is by far one of the most unique and exciting aspects of my purchase of the PMP Exam Study Guide and continued working relationship with PM Learning Solutions and Project Management Queen herself, Mrs. Belinda S. Goodrich.

The PMP exam is tricky because it’s the most correct answer you are looking for, and from the PMI perspective not necessarily the preferred approach/your approach to managing a project. Belinda''s PMP Exam Study Guide provides the PMI perspective giving the knowledge necessary to prep and pass the exam on the first attempt.

I became a certified PMP in 2010 utilizing Belinda''s previous training materials from another edition of the PMBOK.
I studied it cover to cover and I found this PMP Exam Study Guide to be exceptional, better than before. My personal suggestions: pay close attention to Belinda’s Hints and vocabulary reviews as they address the PMI perspective and gives you a better chance of getting the questions correct. Also memorize the formula dump sheet, as you will need know the formulas for success in the Monitoring and Controlling section of the exam (25%).

Best tool on the market to successfully pass the PMP exam. 😊 Do yourself a favor, BUY IT!!!

To those of you who consider ratings of importance when deciding on which PM study guide to purchase, hopefully you will find my ratings of the following PM Study Guides listed below useful in your quest to pass the PMP test! Since I have no affiliation with any of the Authors mentioned below, I can safely say there was no bias in my recommendation.
I used the following criteria to rate the guides:
A) Cost
B) Comprehensive coverage of what to expect on the test
C) Multiple methods presenting same material to increase comprehension through redundancy
D) Using Real-Life case studies to "drive home" complex and/or complicated concepts (look up the difference if you don''t know) as they relate to Project Management
E) How well diagrams, tables, graphs, charts, and presentation examples were utilized to put the 10 Knowledge Areas in context with their specific Process Groups
F) Amount of hints/guidance in order help decipher test questions
G) How right and wrong answers test questions were covered at the end of chapter
H) How consistent subject matter focus was line with the percentage of test questions.
I) Ratings (# of stars) to number of ratings
J) Online test bank availability
Guides I purchased and reviewed:
1) Rita Mulcahy''s PMP Exam Prep, 9th Ed. (4 ½ stars)
2) Belinda S. Goodrich PMP Exam Study Guide (3 stars)
3) Sohel Akhter, Exam Prep Book, 6th Ed. (5 stars)
4) Kim Heldman, PMP Project Management Professional Exam, 9th Ed (3 ½ stars)
5) Andrew Ramdayal, PMP Exam Prep Simplified (2 ½ stars)
6) PMI PMBOK Guide, 6th Ed (3 stars)
7) Andy Crowe, PMP Exam, How To Pass On Your First Try, 6th Ed (3 stars)
Based on my reviews using the criteria I''ve specified above, I would highly recommend "Sohel Akhter, Exam Prep Book, 6th
Nonetheless, only you good people know what does and does not work for you. Good luck passing any and all tests you decide to take!
Kind regards,

I found this PMP Exam Study Guide from Belinda S. Goodrich to be a very well written and extremely well structured guide to help the reader review the extensive body of project management knowledge covered in "digestible" amounts. This guide of course maps to the PMBOK framework, chapters and concepts well, but does so in way that makes the (sometimes dry) subject matter readable in segments. The guide breaks down concepts and sub-topics in a manner that none seem overly long. This, coupled with the author''s use of examples in shaded "blocks", "Belinda''s Hints" to highlight ways to think about key topics, the ITTO tables (of Inputs Tools & Techniques, and Outputs), diagrams and pictures to augment understanding, the segmenting of concepts/sub-topics, and exercises to test understanding ... all contribute to the guide''s usability, readability and effectiveness. In addition, each chapter ends with both Review Questions (and Answer Guide with explanations) and Vocabulary Review tests. Great effort is made to relate the material to the reader''s ability to pass the PMP exam. I really like the (often humorous) mnemonics Belinda uses to help you memorize a key concept or complex formula. The author also provides insights into what the reader should attempt to memorize versus understand in relation to the concept or framework of Knowledge Areas and Process Groups (the ITTO''s are a good example of this advice not to have to memorize). The guide also provides significant insight into the exam experience and recommended approach - as well as a very useful approach to creating your "dump sheet" for the exam. Most importantly, I find the approach to practice tests to be excellent - segmented/smaller initial practice exams (four of them) leading to a full 200 question "Final" Practice Exam. In this manner, you can measure your understanding along the way and build upon your mastery of the material as well as your confidence. The questions are similar to the type of questions on the actual PMP exam - and you get access to mock exams online for 90-days so you can retake them as needed. In, closing, I really like the study guide and see it as an effective tool to facilitate your preparation for the PMP exam (recommend coupling with study group review of chapters, the PMBOK, and a boot-camp - if you can). I know firsthand the effectiveness of Belinda''s approach, as I was lucky enough to have her as instructor for the PMP Boot Camp course I attended - we were prepared for the exam! The only improvement I might recommend would be to add some color to the body of the already quite readable guide.

This is a great book to prepare for the PMP exam! The material is clearly written in a straight-forward manner that allowed me to grasp new concepts and refresh old ones. I like how the book is organized and there is plenty of space to highlight and write notes as you go back over material to review in preparation for the exam. The author does a great job of explaining the PMI philosophy for concepts that are more idealized and theoretical than real-world applications (at least in my experience) such as the Critical Path Method of project scheduling, Expected Monetary Value, and Work Breakdown Structure. I sometimes struggle with abstract project management concepts compared to the practical project management that I experience in my industry. You may do things one way in your work, but for the exam you need to do things the PMI way.

The author clearly explains that the ITTOs do not need to be memorized, but rather effort should be made to fully understand the many processes. She guides readers towards the areas that typically need the most focus to pass the exam. Fifteen chapters of processes are clearly laid out with practice questions, examples and lots of “Belinda’s Hints” along the way. I found these hints to be especially helpful for things like remembering the accomplishments of Juran, Crosby, and Shewhart (not exactly something I deal with at the office, but likely to be on the exam). The book also includes examples and diagrams that help bring the financial concepts to life such as cost estimating and decision tree analysis. Five practice exams in the study guide and access to additional mock exams online are a nice bonus.

The vocabulary review at the end of each chapter is also very helpful to learn the terms that are in scope for the PMP exam. The exam requires deep knowledge of the terms and an ability to spot multiple choice answers that are there to confuse people uncertain about the terminology. An example of this was knowing which terms were real and what they meant such as risk analysis, risk contingency planning, residual risk plan, contingent response strategy, risk mitigation strategy, and risk responses in the project risk management chapter. The vocabulary review, along with the terms depicted in the charts and examples within the chapter helped me memorize key terms before moving on to the next chapter.

I am really glad that I purchased this book. It was an easy read and focused on the key concepts needed to pass the exam, with plenty of tips, examples, and practice opportunities to prepare readers for success.

In fairness, I''ve been working in Project Management for about 15 years and had been putting off taking the exam. I am also usually pretty good at tests.

With those qualifiers in mind, I do have to say that this is the only book I purchased to prepare for the exam. It is largely well written and has some good suggestions to aid retention. For me, it''s important that I understand a process -- not just memorize information -- in order to learn, and I found this book did a great job explaining the processes, knowledge areas, formulas, and input and outputs.

I do have to say that due to the gap between when I purchased the book and when I actively studied I also bought the online quiz access. I found the online questions, quizzes and tests to be exactly the same as what''s in the book with the added benefit that re-takes of them will mix up possible answers. Other than that, I kind of regretted that purchase.

This book may not be great for people who are looking for a crash course. It took me about two weeks of evening study to get to the point I felt really confident that I knew what I needed to in order to confidently take the exam. The quizzes and exams included are helpful at measuring your understanding of the material; but, I didn''t find them very similar to the exam questions I was presented. Of course, the PMP exam has a vast repository of questions -- so, that''s not to say there is NO correlation, I just didn''t experience it myself.

Finally, (and the reason for my 4/5 rating) if you''re in to grammar and consistency, there are parts of this book that will drive you nuts. There is also an answer key for chapter twelve that isn''t correct. If you could care less about grammar and don''t mind that seeing the WRONG answer for a couple of questions, I''m sure it''s fine.

Best wishes.

The PMP Study Guide by Belinda S. Goodrich is an excellent resource for those preparing for the PMP certification exam. I highly recommend it as an important and useful tool. This well written book is comprehensive in content and in it’s approach to addressing the amount of information necessary to master.
The guide contains content on how to prepare for taking the exam and how to deal with the human aspect of anxiety during preparation and during the actual exam. The chapter on the PMP exam gives information on the entire process, not just the exam itself. Understanding the application process and record keeping for potential auditing takes some of the mystery and fear out of becoming a certified PMP. The explanation of the exam experience, exam anxiety and strategy are all very valuable as the exam itself is challenging. This is information you won’t learn elsewhere unless someone who has been through the exam explains this to you.
Chapters in the guide are organized in a way that makes sense. Each chapter provides a scope of what is covered and includes a detailed explanation of important concepts, along with vocabulary tied to that content. Thorough out the guide HINTS are included. These bring focus to elements that are important to consider and to solidify your understanding. The topics highlighted are those for you to think about both for exam preparation and for being a good PM. Through these HINTs you get a fuller picture of the chapter content in a different way by considering varying views on a topic. This helps with your learning by reinforcing key concepts.
Understanding the concepts tied to ITTOs, not just trying to memorizing them, is well covered. The description of each is presented in a summary fashion and is a very helpful way of learning and how they apply across the 49 processes. If I had thought of ITTOs in this way I would have saved myself hours of studying. The information presented on ITTOs sets a strong foundation in how they are utilized in managing projects.
Key concepts are made clearer via the use of diagrams and graphics presented throughout the guide. This content allows you to visualize the concepts covered and is a key technique to help you solidify your understanding. Adults learn in different ways and the use of graphics allows for the reader to digest information in a clear manner. Exercises are also included throughout the guide to check understanding as you progress through your studying. The use of a combination of methods to explain the vast amount of content is very effective. I find this particularly useful in the chapter covering the topic of project schedule planning.
The subject of procurement was one that gave members of my PMP study group some trouble (we used a different guide). This study guide covers the processes for this knowledge area well. The information presented on controlled a project is well written including good exercises and graphics along with the written text. The formulas you need to understand for these processes are addressed in a clear and complete manner. Taking the time to work through the exercises for topics such as earned value, forecasting and TCPI are well worth it. Make sure to work on you exam dump sheet as highlighted. The need for memorization of this information is called out and the guide allows you to thoroughly work through it and establish a level of confidence.
The practice questions are very representative of those on the actual exam. When I consider these questions as compared to those included in other resources, those in this guide as excellent. You need to avoid just working on questions that are too simple and straight forward. The questions in this guide give you the opportunity to work through questions that are situational in nature, which is exactly what you will see as common on the exam.
Remember to also access the additional information that is on line and available to you when you purchase this guide. The PMP spreadsheet is a useful tool for capturing your hours of working on projects you’ll need as part of the application process. The Quick Start Guide covers a wide range of topics that will give you a strong start on your journey toward certification.
