Description

Product Description

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Plant Paradox comes a guide to one-pot cooking for the whole family, with a special focus how to make the Plant Paradox program kid-friendly.

Since the publication of The Plant Paradox in 2017, hundreds of thousands of people have embraced Dr. Gundry’s nutritional protocol—and experienced life-changing results. But most of Dr. Gundry’s readers aren’t cooking for themselves alone. “How can I extend this way of eating to my entire family? And is it safe for my kids?” are the questions he is most often asked.

In The Plant Paradox Family Cookbook, Dr. Gundry reassures parents as he sets the record straight, providing an overview of children’s nutritional needs and explaining how we can help our kids thrive on the Plant Paradox program—a diet low in lectins. Dr. Gundry offers shocking evidence of how the Plant Paradox program is not only “safe” for kids, but also the best possible way to set them up for a lifetime of health and responsible eating.

As research continues to bear out, a healthy microbiome—or “gut”—is the cornerstone of human health. The foods we eat at the beginning of our lives have a long-term impact on the makeup of our microbiome. Lectin-containing foods—such as grains, legumes, certain fruits and vegetables, and conventional dairy—damage it by creating holes in the gut wall and triggering the kind of systemic inflammation that lays the groundwork for disease. And yet, many of the foods we are routinely told to feed our children—think milk, whole grain bread, peanut butter—have an incredibly high lectin content.

The Plant Paradox Family Cookbook includes more than 80 recipes that make cooking for a family a breeze. And since pressure cooking is the best and easiest way to reduce lectin content in foods like grains and beans, the majority of the quick and easy recipes are Instant-Pot friendly. From weeknight dinners to make-ahead breakfasts to snacks and even lunchbox-ready meals, The Plant Paradox Family Cookbook will help the whole family experience the incredible benefits of the Plant Paradox program.

I was excited to see what would be included in this new Gundry cookbook, as I love the program, but I was disappointed by how many recipes include nightshades, especially tomatoes and peppers. Alkaloid sensitivity isn''t helped by pressure cooking, and one of the reasons I was drawn to the program originally was that these ingredients were de-emphasized in previous recipes. Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese is also an important part of several recipes, but the real thing isn''t available to me locally and is expensive to order in, so I don''t use it. This leaves me needing to work around these ingredients in too many recipes, in the same way that non-Gundry-approved recipes do. I''m comfortable with pressure cooking already (love my Instant Pot), so what I want is a set of curated recipes that creatively avoids my most problematic ingredients; I don''t feel this collection does that to the extent that earlier Gundry recipes did. All of the dishes look delicious and would probably work well for lectin-free cooks who don''t have these specific issues, but not for me.

This book starts out (for me) with a bang. The author dives right into the subject of lectins. These are proteins in plants that are like natural pesticides and they aren''t all that good for you. Cooking and soaking does get rid of some of it but if you want to know why non-grain dog foods may be toxic to some dogs (recent findings) then you can probably blame the lectins. They are found in nightshade foods (eggplant, tomatoes) and also beans and legumes. Lectins upset your gut so they may be something to avoid. The one he focuses on is Wheat Germ Agglutinin that may minic insulin in your body and help to make you fat (why bread adds to your weight so insidiously as many of you observe.)

So his point is that you need to watch out for some of the plant foods as they may not be good for your particular situation.

The book has a lot of good recipes including a very nice lamb dish and all of them use the single pot, instant or crock and that makes cooking easier for the family. Also has those single sheet-pan baked dinners that are so easy to clean up.

Some recipes are different "hearts of palm" "fish" sticks (I love hearts of palm) and salmon-asparagus fajitas, but also beef and broccoli and broccoli cheddar soup, minestrone and lettuce wraps. Lots of very good vegetable recipe that will help the family eat more veg and enjoy it. A section has basics for the instant pot such as rice, hardboiled eggs and potatoes.

Not all lectin containing foods are bad, but this book gives you good recipes, a lot of "keto" things and some ideas to consider.

Just received the new cookbook😊
Love it.
It has 4 chapters on education about Plant Paradox.
It gives ideas for getting your family on board, it addresses children’s dietary needs. It has a meal planning section and a 7 day sample meal plan.
There are so many recipes in here I have not seen & look forward to making , like a pancake cooked in a cake pan 😊 sweet potato lasagna, macadamia butter chocolate cheesecake, Keto kids fudge pops, a few sauces, Naan bread, mushroom fries etc. I’ve already made the walnut spice cake from the book and we love it.
Detailed pressure cooking facts, which is nice.
He shares recipes from other bloggers and everything has a vegetarian version if there is meat in it.
LOVE the lunch recipes, some great ideas.
Everyone has different taste buds, so in my opinion (my love of certain foods) all these recipes are great!
The pictures are wonderful in the book also.
I love it has family friendly serving sizes and ideas for children so I can prepare fun meals for my toddler grandson and future grandchildren.
Will definitely be buying more books for Christmas gifts for my adult children and baby shower gifts.🎁

I am so glad that I pre-ordered this new book. I have been eating lectin free for over 1 year and am feeling better. This new book has many wonderful recipes that I have already tried and more that are next in line. My electric pressure cooker/slow cooker has been used a lot and the new cookbook has many more. I like the cranberry orange bread and cranberry sauce and feel like I can now have some "old" favorites. The recipes are easy to follow and use ingredients from my lectin free pantry items. I just had to add organic oranges for the zest. I also own the first cookbook and found more I want to make in this new book.

Better and better! I first went through the book to see how many crazy ingredients I would need in order to make the recipes, not too bad, especially since I''m more used to a lectin free diet since the first Dr. Gundry cookbook. I have to say that the foods that I have prepared are very impressive. I especially love the "sturdy sandwich bread" which also makes the best toast! The Thai Coconut Chicken was so good we made it again the next night. There are sections that explain the plant paradox plan as well as breakfast, lunch, dinner, and delicious treats (gotta pick up some more Monk fruit sweetner, it really is good! ) I still have difficulty finding some ingredients that are probably easily found in California but this cookbook was well worth the money and I''m enjoying learning new ways to cook and eat healthy. Most recipes are Instant pot friendly which I like.

I''ve been adhering to the lectin free diet for 7 months and got this book among 3 to help me from the get go.

First, a third of the book is an explanation of the diet and has no recipes - a waste for me since I already had Gundry''s Plant Paradox book.
Second, a lot of recipes are wrong ("Sweet Potato Noodle Lasagna on pg 136 is NEVER going to fit in a pan you place inside a instapot, the "Not-Too-Spicy Tikka Masala" on pg 132 is a soupy mess, and the "Study Sandwich Bread" on pg 164 only works if you divide the dough and place part in a much smaller bread pan than in the instructions and use the rest for buns or what have you, and these are just a few examples).
Third, while I get that many may want options for traditional foods that are lectin free, some of these are nutritional bombs ("Quick Baguette" on pg 185 is includes 50% pure starch in the flours used, a cup of cheese, plus milk and 3 eggs) and should carry a warning label such as "to be consumed rarely in small quantities".
Fourth, and most important, this book is going to be useless to a lot of people who don''t have access to speciality stores (lots of recipes for buffalo mozzarella here) and are trying to cook for a family on a budget (a pastured chicken is going to cost you $25-$40 for a single bird folks!).

It gets 2 stars only because it did serve a purpose while I was trying to get started, and did give me ideas about how to make substitutions and modifications to excellent recipes I already have to make them compliant with the lectin free diet.
