Description

Product Description

Atlas of Indian Nations is a comprehensive resource for those interested in Native American history and culture. Told through maps, photos, art, and archival cartography, this is the story of American Indians that only National Geographic can tell.   In the most comprehensive atlas of Native American history and culture available, the story of the North American Indian is told through maps, photos, art, and archival cartography. This illustrated atlas is perfect for fans of Empire of the Summer Moon, Blood and Thunder, and National Geographic atlases, as well as those fascinated with the Old West. Organized by region, this encyclopedic reference details Indian tribes in these areas: beliefs, sustenance, shelter, alliances and animosities, key historical events, and more. See the linguistic groupings and understand the constantly shifting, overlapping boundaries of the tribes. Follow the movement, growth, decline, and continuity of Indian nations and their lifestyles.

Review

"...gorgeously illustrated volume...Chock full of historical and contemporary maps, photographs, and paintings, this smart hybrid of art book and textbook is irresistible to leaf through because of the eye-catching images on every page. But Treuer''s clear, accessible text is the complementary gem." -- Publishers Weekly

I am enjoying this book as I learn about the what has seemed to me overwhelming number of tribes of native Americans. The art work and illustrations and maps are wonderful. I do have a criticism for the author. When I look at the citations for the art work, I see the name of the Museum, but no artist is listed. [I am thinking pp. 22-23 from the Art Gallery of Ontario. If the artist is ''unknown'', it would seem proper to specify this. Any artist wants acknowledgement of their work of art. I hope the author sees this review and can post a correction if there are future editions...or even send me a list! Thanks in advance!

I got this book because it wrote about the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians which no one else seems to know exists, even though it is a Federally Recognized tribe. Lots of other info.

I''ve been a huge fan of pretty much all the Nat. Geo Atlases. This one comes up short in my opinion. I simply don''t care for the way it''s set up. For instance, it''s not necessarily chronological, it dissects tribes by regions. Furthermore, because of the time frame when the English had begun Colonizing North America....We miss out on whom the French, Spanish & Dutch had interactions with. I feel as if the East Coast, aside from the Cherokee & the Seminole, had been simply glazed over.

This is a superbly constructed volume with great illustrations, wonderfully drafted maps and very clear textual explantions. As far as it goes, Hollywood has created a fairy tale out of the destruction of America''s native cultures, having this book to accompany, "Bury my heart at Wounded Knee", helps younger readers (I first read the latter at 17) realise how great a tragedy the reality was. It is hard to accept that natives of our European nations, many of whom could be our distant relatives, we''re knowingly responsible for the genocide of tribe after tribe, whether by disease or design. What price Manifest Destiny? This book lists the cost, totals the bill. We may one day reach for the stars, hopefully by then we might have learned from this and other inhuman deeds. What we must not do is happily swallow the fairy tale because that is much easier.
