Description

Product Description

The Cajun Night Before Christmas® has been a part of Louisiana’s holiday traditions since it was first published. Now, more than forty-five years later, a new generation is discovering the charm of Gaston® the Green-Nosed Alligator. First conceived by J.B. Kling, Jr. writing as ‘Trosclair’, the CLIO award-winning sales jingle for the Bergeron Plymouth Company in New Orleans was based on the Clement Moore poem. The exclusive rights were purchased by Pelican Publishing Company and the illustrations of then fledgling artist James Rice brought the story to life. Beloved master storyteller Coleen Salley narrated the read-along CD. Radio personality and voice talent Tommy Joe Breaux became the voice behind the recordings at City Park and on the audio version of the adventures of Gaston®. The book also created what has become the largest segment at Pelican Publishing—the children’s book division.

With the passing of publisher Dr. Milburn Calhoun and his wife Nancy Calhoun, illustrator James Rice, and the loss of Colleen Salley, the people behind the creation of the story are mostly gone. What remains is a long legacy of delight. Each year at the Celebration in the Oaks light show featuring the classic cabin from the story, dedicated staff from Pelican Publishing collect memories of attendees as they flow through the premiere preview parties. From now grown children who remember it as the first Louisiana tale they ever heard to young parents who laugh about a non-Louisiana spouse reading it to their children in full-blown Cajun accent, the book is universally loved and remembered. Teachers talk about how they use it in the classroom, business people mention they send it to out of state clients, and children laugh as they try to mimic the dialect that has all but disappeared from everyday life. The classic tale has been interpreted in gingerbread houses in competitions as far away as California and in cakes at the Edible Book competition at NOMA in New Orleans. For years, the miniature book ornaments have appeared on Christmas trees across the country as a reminder of a faraway Louisiana home. Even the New York Times praised the lilt, the humor, and the rough-hewn drawings of the Cajun tale. At Pelican Publishing, a huge portrait of Gaston® and his bearded friend hangs in the boardroom watching over each new author and illustrator that joins the family.

Got for my son-in-law who lives in Louisiana and is hard to buy for, as a stocking stuffer this Christmas. I’d never heard of this book, nor am I Cajun or familiar with their dialect. Of course, I read the book and could still find the humor in it myself even still. My only disappoint was I asked that he read the book to all of us Christmas Eve, but of course he never did, nor the entire weekend we were there either. Maybe next Christmas if they haven’t lost the book and can still remember where it is; here’s hoping. It’s a very short, easy read as well as a cute and funny version on the traditional “The Night Before Christmas.” I’d especially recommend it as a small gift if you have family or a friend that’s Cajun and/or lives or grew up in and around LA and definitely it they can talk with their accent and is willing to read this cute book aloud to everyone! I can only imagine the fun and laughter it will bring!

Being a NC resident but LA native, my young children (ages 4 and 1) are not being raised in the cajun culture I grew up in, though I do my best to make them aware of and appreciative of all things cajun. I am sure that my 4 year-old''s first joke will involve Boudreaux and Thibodeaux, maybe even Clotile. My wife and I read to our daughters every night. This book is my favorite option, and is one of my 4 year-old''s favorites, regardless of the time of year. Good quality, fast shipping and entertaining - also a great way to help me brush up on the accent I''ve lost over the years.

My brothers and I grew up in south Louisiana among the Cajuns, ''tho we have not a drop of the blood in us. When my brothers were having children, I discovered this book and thought they might enjoy having copies to read to their children. My older brother made it part of the family Christmas tradition, reading it with the full Cajun accent. Now his three children have each had a child, so I purchased copies for each of them -- for every other year when they spend Christmas away from Grandpa and have to read the story themselves.

I chose this book because I am trying to reconstruct a collection of children''s books that I started when I was three years old. I had to get a replacement for this one because it was my daughter''s favorite book when she was in 3rd grade. She is in her mid thirties now and has a collection of her own now. When she was in the 3rd grade she checked this book out from the school library. I got a note from the librarian saying that the book was due. We searched the house and finally found it between the mattresses on her bed and took it back to the library. After about two weeks we received another note that the book was due.
After searching again we found the book and once more took it back. Two days later I found the same book in Adrienne''s room and asked her about it and she told me she really liked it because it had alligators! I looked in all the local book stores and could not find this book for Adrienne''s Christmas present. I contacted the library and asked if I could buy one of their copies but they didn''t do that. My first experience with Amazon was when they found a brand new copy of this book, which was out of print at that time and also difficult to find. It took a little time but they never gave up even though I had. Shortly before Valentine''s Day the book arrived! Now, at last, other children at school could enjoy the alligators, Adrienne could stop hiding the book so she wouldn''t have to take it back and check it out again, the librarian and I go out to lunch regularly and I could stop including overdue book fine in my budget. That''s what I call a happy ending and why I love this book!!
