Honorable Mention, Graphis 2021 Design Annual Competition

Popular music has long been a powerful force for social change. Protest songs have served as anthems regarding war, racism, sexism, ecological destruction and so many other crucial issues.

Music Is Power takes us on a guided tour through the past 100 years of politically-conscious music, from Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie to Green Day and NWA. Covering a wide variety of genres, including reggae, country, metal, psychedelia, rap, punk, folk and soul, Brad Schreiber demonstrates how musicians can take a variety of approaches— angry rallying cries, mournful elegies to the victims of injustice, or even humorous mockeries of authority—to fight for a fairer world. While shining a spotlight on Phil Ochs, Gil Scott-Heron, The Dead Kennedys and other seminal, politicized artists, he also gives readers a new appreciation of classic acts such as Lesley Gore, James Brown, and Black Sabbath, who overcame limitations in their industry to create politically potent music

Music Is Power tells fascinating stories about the origins and the impact of dozens of world-changing songs, while revealing political context and the personal challenges of legendary artists from Bob Dylan to Bob Marley.

Well researched and detailed, well written and easy to read, this excellent book gave me a chance to re-examine my own thoughts regarding a large number of songs written by so many artists who were not afraid to take a stand. They also led their fans on the path that encourages them to make difficult choices. This risky deviation from the simple task of entertaining the public has seriously damaged many careers, and Brad Schreiber cleverly reminds us that power comes with responsibilities and consequences. I thought I knew a lot, but “Music Is Power" reminded me that I still have a lot to learn.

Brad Schreiber''s Music is Power is a must read for anyone interested in music and how music aids in forming  thoughts in relation to what we are experiencing--an inspiring and important book. A fun, quick read and historically significant.     Music has the power to move culture. Brad Schreiber is in tune with this and delivers the goods in a succinct informative and thoughtful style. He write with passion and wit and with a keen sense of his subject.     My favorite chapter is the one on Janis Ian, Lesley Gore and P.F. Sloan. I was privileged to be a close friend of Phil  and although positioned as a successful writer of pop songs, he was an authentic street poet—P.F. Sloan would have dug the heck out of this book!  Lesley Gore wore a pop song cover but tapped into teenage angst--powerfully and beautifully.  I am happy that Brad brought Lesley into this arena.      I have purchased four copies to give to friends. I don''t do that very often.

While I am very informed in many areas of popular music, I was intrigued when I heard about Mr. Schreiber''s new book because I realized I haven''t paid as much attention to music''s power to affect our opinions about weighty issues.

I know from his previous efforts that he is very informed about many musical genres and styles but in the first few pages it is clear that he has researched the subject of protest and social commentary music extremely well. Perhaps better still is his ability to keep the book interesting despite the weighty concepts. His style draws one in so that one can sense what it was like for the musicians to take give voice to their sense of injustice. His ability to clearly describe a complex situation keeps ones attention.

I learned many, many facts that I was not previously aware of, even about some of my favorite artists such as Marvin Gaye, Pink Floyd, and Peter Gabriel (which alone is worth the price of the book). As well, I learned about a few genres (especially modern styles like Hip Hop and Rap) and now have an increased appreciation for them and their message of change.

The book illuminates the importance of socially-relevant music and encourages me to think that there are still people with the power to encourage our society to not give up on being heard and changing the world. This world needs that now.

I highly recommend the book!

If you’re mad as hell and can’t take it anymore, Brad Schreiber has a killer playlist for you.

In “Music Is Power: Popular Songs, Social Justice, and the Will to Change,” the author examines the almost incalculable influence musicians have had when it comes to effecting social change. From icons like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Bobs Dylan and Marley to lesser-heralded artists like P.F. Sloan, Tom Lehrer, and Gil-Scott Heron, this is the story of voices daring to say what others would not, often at uncomfortably high volume. Scruffy kids, misfits, and the occasional genius singing fightin’ songs for fightin’ times.

We need their words and music more than ever. Get up, stand up, and grab this book today.

In a lifetime of reading books about music, whether they are by the creators of the music themselves, or by scholars and critics, I have never come across such a fascinating history of popular music. “Music Is Power” discusses not so much why music is good, but how it has influenced American culture, and consequently, world culture.

Author Brad Schreiber provides not only the analysis but the history behind a song often dismissed as a disposable pop song but is actually an early feminist anthem: Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me.” That story is eye opening enough to make the book worthwhile, but with in-depth portions on Phil Ochs, James Brown, the importance of punk music, and even the emergence of hip-hop, even the casual music fan will find that this book will actually make all the music mentioned in it even more fresh and exciting as it was the first time it was heard.

Schreiber’s writing style walks the line between scholarly and conversational, but every sentence is warm and approachable. This is a fantastic book for not only the music-snob-geezer, but also for the young music fan who may be discovering The Beatles for the first time.

A fascinating read, Music is Power traces the history of protest music starting with Joe Hill and Woody Guthrie and winding up with Green Day and The Dixie Chicks. Everyone reading this will have their own favorite artists and chapters, but I particularly enjoyed the back story of Marvin Gaye''s "What''s Going On" (co-written by Renaldo Benson and Al Cleveland) and Berry Gordy''s antipathy toward the tune. Another interesting chapter touches on Leslie Gore''s hit "You Don''t Own Me" as a proto-feminist anthem (though both the message and Ms. Gore''s sexuality were toned down for mass consumption in the 1960''s). Through out the book, Mr. Schreiber relates how concerned artists dealt with producers, fans, press, and setbacks. Along the way there are some sad tales, some interesting trivia, and some funny stories. After reading Music is Power one comes away with a glimpse into how many iconic popular protest songs came to be written as well as the undeniable impact that these songs had on society. Highly recommended.
