To be honest, the trailer is what got me interested in buying this movie for my kids. I thought the music was catchy and the plot interesting. I did not read any reviews before my purchase. However—
***I recommend that you read through both positive and negative reviews before your purchase.***

If your children are hyper-sensitive to villain-like qualities, intense feelings in a fleeing-situation, or the emotions of being trapped, or separated, wait to get this when they''re older.

As for my kids, (2 and 4) they really enjoyed this. They started watching Thomas and Friends this past winter when Netflix had their Christmas movies--and we''ve been watching episodes on YouTube show ever since. And now, we have been slowly purchasing these episodes and movies for our video library. This is our second movie purchased for their entertainment.

As an adult viewing this, I find the the plot and emotions comparable to that of Day of the Diesels. Both movies have intense, real-life plots; and both movies have villains who use temptations to lure the antagonist in. The biggest difference here is Thomas gets physically trapped and forced into labor, whereas Days of the Diesels, Percy is emotionally trapped and puppet-ed.

There are several other actions that are questionable—and probably beyond the comprehension of a young child—but our world is full of these kinds of actions and this kind of movie is probably the gentlest way to introduce it to children. For this aspect of the movie, this show can be an opportunity for parent-to-child discussion, education, and hopefully prevention of such things happening to kids. In my personal opinion, it is never too early to start guiding our kids through the unpleasant things life throws us.

As for the rest of the features of the movie:
—I actually like the added tilting movements of the engines. It is a huge difference from the statue bodies from before, so it’s noticeable; but it’s not nearly as drastic or distracting as the Chuggington series. As far as I could tell, the amount of movement depended on the character. It really made a difference in James.

—This movie is definitely a musical. Even though the tunes are catchy, there are A LOT of them. It was probably how they got this show extended this to a full-length movie. Initially, this made the movie hard to watch for me; but for the intended audience, my kids, they enjoy it and can easily sing along to it. These songs are now a part of our daily routine, “WHO GOES THERE?!” “You can give anything a try!”

Overall, the movie is well received and I support the changes being made. This is one my kids'' favorite Thomas movie to watch. If my review counts for a vote in the direction of the emotional intensity, keep a foot in both worlds: An intense ride of a rare situation, and more gentle like what “mundane” daily life is.

While not "perfect," it is perfect enough for my kids. And that''s what matters!

Before I review it, what matters most are my kids'' reaction to it: they LOVE this movie! Other than Hero of the Rails, this is the only other Thomas movie they''ve ever requested again and again, back-to-back. My sons are (currently) 2.5 and 5, and not one part of this movie has ever scared them. And as for the music? Well, it''s the first true "musical" Thomas movie: Six different songs, with the first and last based upon one another in order to start and finish the story arch. My kids can now sing all six songs by heart, in the car, in the bath, at daycare, at the dinner table. And if it wasn''t enjoyable enough, it''s PERCY who delivers the funniest, grown-up humored joke in the entire movie!

There are two significant, questionable (adult-upsetting) plot choices made by the production company in terms of how the story unravels. 1) Thomas outright STEALS a job from James, and as a result, Sir Toppemhat is complacent, and James is stuck unfairly pulling Thomas'' branch line in his place. Thomas is never truly punished, scolded, or even given a talking to for his selfish actions. 2) Two trains working in what can only be referred to "train hell" - a molten steelworks factory - lure other unsuspecting trains into the factory and essentially entrap them because they, themselves, are overworked in their highly-dangerous professions and would rather be doing nothing except telling their "captives" what to do. Ultimately, they become friends with Thomas and the other new friends Thomas has made along his journey on the mainland... essentially rewarding the former captors for their misdeeds.

It''s not a perfect story. Again, I''ve highlighted larger, adult-noticeable flaws. Otherwise, the movie itself is actually quite enjoyable as an adult to watch! The pacing is very good for keeping my kids attention; the songs are far from Grammy- or Oscar-worthy, but plenty fun enough for my sons to have memorized. I believe "catchy" is the correct word. I feel like modern toddler TV shows have moved towards the "act poorly and be rewarded" model - look at great shows like Curious George and Caiou (well, Caiou maybe not so great) as perfect examples.

And, perhaps most importantly, my kids didn''t see the two plot issues I''ve had, but instead gleaned the positive messages: Even if you don''t think you can do anything right, you should still always try; Friendship is more important than selfish pride.

So, after all this... I do so badly want to give it only 4 stars, but cannot! Because it''s not really about what I think in this case, but what my sons think. And to them? This is perhaps the BEST movie yet. Musical Thomas movies are hopefully the way of the future! Combine the musical idea with better stories (like Hero of the Rails or The Great Race) and they''d have a superb toddler masterpiece.

This movie had so much potential, but Mattel really blew it.
Cons: Thomas literally steals James'' goodstrain, and takes it to England (the trains live on Sodor Island, a fictional island right between Britain and the Isle of Man) himself. Thomas is never punished for this, he just gives James a lame apology at the end. The disorganized bonehead controller of the railway doesn''t care when Thomas disappears with the train, or when he comes back home. He is unbelievably out of character here, lacking any common sense. Anyway, Thomas gets lost and meets 3 experimental engines that are seriously out in the middle of the woods playing in an old shunting yard. How do they expect normal people to believe this nonsense? Later, Thomas meets Frankie and Hurricane at the Steelworks who con him into working for them. He is kept behind bars when not working and sings about how he wants to go home. It''s so sad. He then finds an old track out, his song changes to a happy song, then he crashes! Poor Thomas nearly cries. He is found later. After a while, he does escape, but then sees James has come to look for him, but Frankie and Hurricane have got James now! He teams up with the experimental engines, making a humorous fail of a diversion, leading to a chase through the Steelworks. At one point, Thomas is literally dropped into a giant pot of molten metal, but is somehow knocked away just in time. Hurricane''s wheels are then accidentally melted. Which leads to Frankie crying away that she''ll have to do all the work. James points out that it serves her right for all the things she''s done. But then Thomas suggests that the experimental engines help at the steelworks. The villains just get what they want. No proper agreement is made with real humans, the experimental engines just start work. Then the movie ends with a corny musical number about being friends. Finally, all the trains and rolling stock can suddenly bounce around on their wheels like the characters in Chuggington. While I think it''s funny when the trucks do it, It goes way overboard. The realism is so darn off. The conning, the dark Steelworks (seems to represent the hell for trains), the bouncing, and the poor message all work together to create a 2 star film! This is not a toddler''s movie. The experimental engines didn''t help the plot at all. When I saw the trailer, I assumed the experimental engines were hiding from being scrapped by Frankie and Hurricane. That would make more sense than them just being there.
Here are the few pros: The Troublesome Trucks are really funny, they now each have their own voice. Merlin is my favorite in this movie. He is an experimental engine and is actually based on a real train used in WWII with 3 funnels that shot smoke into the air to make itself ''invisible'' to enemy helicopters above. Merlin takes his ''invisibility'' too seriously. He cries, ''Invisibility ON!'' and blows smoke everywhere, thinking he is then magically invisible to everyone, which is quite clever and funny.
Overall, while some bits are good, but a really unfortunate choice was made by Mattel to darken the story so much. A great idea for a movie, ruined. Don''t waste your $$ unless you are an older Thomas fan wanting to see the worst of it.

The story is very slow and a little creepy. The movie struggled to keep the attention of my 3 year old who normally does good with movies. He walked off several times only to come back when the story line picked up. This movie would also make a great opportunity for parents to talk to their kids about why you don''t talk to strangers.
***Spoiler Alert***
Thomas is basically kidnaped after being seduced into following two other engines and then made to do forced labor as a slave.
On a positive note, there are a couple of funny scenes and the songs/music weren''t bad either. The kid napping situation is half way redeemed when, only after being subdued by Thomas and a group of new friends, the two engines say they just needed help and were all alone. This apparently makes kidnapping ok. See if that flys in a court of law. Thomas helps everyone (almost everyone, the poor crane is left without a friend but no one seems to notice) and the ending is happy with Thomas and James apologizing to each other and stating that life isn''t a competition, it''s about being friends.
All in all, I hate that I purchased a digital copy of this movie (because rental wasn''t available). If I had at least bought a physical copy, I could sell it to someone else. The movie was made with typical Thomas quality, but seriously lacked in story line. However, if you or your kid is a big Thomas fan, none of this will matter and you might even walk away with a smile. I, on the other hand, am now out $14.99 that I will never see again.

Journey Beyond Sodor isn''t a bad movie, but it''s obvious that Mattel wants to change the franchise in a major way to boost toy sales. That drags this movie down tremendously and gets in the way of the wonderful characters, history, and mythology that had become the forefront of Seasons 17-21.

As for the DVD itself, Thomas looks better in high definition. A Blu-ray would have been much, much better. The DVD doesn''t have a French audio track, nor does it have English subtitles. That is very disappointing. Most of the other Thomas DVDs/Blu-rays from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment have them (or at least a French audio option). Overall, I can''t quite recommend it, even to the target audience.

Some good songs though.

I''m a long time Thomas fan and I did enjoy movie. However, I don''t like the bouncing in all of the trains which is too much and it makes it terrible but I do like the new characters including the Experimental Engines Lexi, Theo, and Merlin ( who''s is my most favorite of the 3) and the Steelworks engines Hurricane and Frankie were pretty good villains until they''ve learned their lessons in the end (except for Beresford which I not so sure of even after he grabbed Thomas with his hook). Another thing that I liked is the Steelworks itself, it kinda reminds me of the Smelters Yard on Sodor (from seasons 5, 6, 7, 8, and 12) which I do hope that the production team will plan to bring back in season 21. But one that bothers me is the slate wagon on standard gauge track which is meant to belong on the narrow gauge. My biggest issue is when Thomas twisted his face slightly during his first encounter with Beresford and worst of all is the scene where Thomas and all 3 experimental engines poke their heads up from the bushes. But overall it''s a pretty good movie.

Our 1 year old son is really into movies that have songs in them. One day this was on the television and our son loved it so much that we had DVR it. The reason we bought it was that we were going on a 2 1/2 hour flight and we were worried that our overly active 1 year old would just cry the entire time because all he ever wants to do is walk. Well this story has a happy ending, not only did he sit and watch this the entire time but even though he couldn''t hear the movie because he wouldn''t keep the headphones on, he knew exactly when the songs came on and would dance on my wife''s lap to each song. More importantly the story is ok and the songs are good enough for adults to listen to for a couple of hundred times.

My son liked this movie and was not scared by it like some of the other reviewer''s children. However, Thomas is a jerk in this movie. I don''t know why he''s the main character in a show because he always acts like a selfish child (which is basically the rest of the trains too). But in this movie, not only does he act selfish by stealing James'' route to the mainland, but because of Thomas, the experimental trains that he meets in this movie end up with the "kidnappers" at the end of the movie. Sure, you''re supposed to think everything''s all fine by the end with Hurricane and Frankie not being as mean anymore, but seriously, why would you leave trains you just met in the care of former "kidnappers." A bit messed up.
